Tools For Measuring Speed

Tools to measure speed come in many shapes and sizes.

The fastest car, the 100-mph pitch on the ball field and the unbelievably fast Internet connection are all of great interest to the average man today. Knowing the speed of what's happening around us has become not only an interest, but also a necessity in order to find ways to increase the speed of these things. This is why we create machines to calculate the speed of all the various aspects of life passing us by.

Anemometer

Mostly used by meteorological departments and weathermen, an anemometer measures the speed of the wind. This machine rotates when wind blows toward it, like a fan, and the speed is measured using the Beaufort Wind Scale. The Beaufort Wind Scale was developed in the 1800s by Sir Francis Beaufort and measures wind in increments of 0 to 12.

Internet Speed Test Programs

The speed of the Internet DSL or cable connection is vital for smooth transfer of information. Almost all Internet service providers base their billing rates on the speed of their service. Therefore, it is important for the browser/consumer to test the speed of Internet connectivity for better data transfer as well as to make sure you are getting what you pay for. Internet speed test programs measure and display the rate at which transfers across the network connection at any given time. Apart from the technical characteristics, speed of Internet accessibility is affected by the amount of traffic across the chosen network, day of the week and the hour of the day, as well as the route. Many of these programs are free online. Some of them you download and others can check your Internet speed directly from their website. The test will help you understand how long it may take data transfers to finish or how fast your LAN is.

Radar Gun

A radar gun, as defined by the Merriam-Webster dictionary, is "a handheld device that uses radar to measure the speed of a moving object." This gun measures the speed of a ball in sports such as tennis and baseball. Police officers also use this device to track the speed of moving vehicles on the road. The gun, when an object moves across its radar, measures its speed and a number appears on the screen at the back of the gun indicating how fast the object was moving.

Digital Speedometer

Speed limits on highways and streets make speedometers necessary for drivers to know how fast their vehicle is moving. All cars, trucks and motorcycles come equipped with factory-fitted speedometers that give an estimate of the speed at which you may be driving, like 10, 35 or 60 mph. Digital speedometers help give a more accurate measurement of a vehicle's speed, such as 28 or 91 mph. Digital speedometers are a regular feature in most luxury cars.
