Fun Ways To Edit Photos

Your standard digital picture can be edited by various software and websites.

Taking pictures has become far more advanced than simply aiming a camera and snapping a picture. There's another process that pictures can go through before they turn up online or in a photo album: editing. Photo-editing software and specialty websites allow do-it-yourself photographers to alter and edit photos in many different fun, unusual ways.

Web Editing

One way to edit photos in fun ways is by uploading pictures into a website editing program. Such sites add specified effects to your photos using editing templates. For example, Yearbook Yourself takes an existing mug shot and edits it so that it looks like a black and white yearbook photograph. Users can even select from different decades. MagMyPic takes existing photos and turns them into fake magazine covers (see Resources). These are fun, free ways to spice up your favorite head shot.

Enhancements

Specialty photo-editing software, such as Adobe Photoshop, offers a variety of tools to artistically enhance your photo. For example, users can create richly layered photos by revealing one portion of a photo through another photo using layer masks to control the transparency of certain areas of the photograph. Users can also give their images an extra dimension by adding depth with such tools as drop shadows, glows and bevels, which can be applied to any photograph.

Add Text

Have you ever snapped a photo that was just begging for a caption? In many photo-editing softwares, users have the option to tell a story through their pictures by adding captions. In Adobe Photoshop 9, users can add text bubbles, titles and labels to any picture, and choose from a variety of different fonts. Other geometric shapes and symbols can be selected for insertion in the photograph as well.

Other Effects

Citrify is a free, Web-based photo-editing software. It includes many unique photo-editing effects, such as the "sketch effect," which transforms digital pictures into sketch-like drawings (see Resources). It also offers the "watercolour effect," which turns pictures into water-color-like portraits. In addition to these fun editing features, it offers several other standard features, such as shine removal, wrinkle removal and a teeth-whitening tool.
