Canon lenses
are designed for use with Canon cameras.
Technically speaking, Canon lenses are designed for Canon's line of cameras only. There are various mechanical differences between each brand of camera -- one of these being the way the lens mounts to the camera. Despite this, there are many third-party lens adapters that allow Canon lenses to be used with other camera types. Canon lenses may produce a slightly different look when used with other camera brands.
Third-Party Adapters
Third-party adapters fit between your camera and your lens to make mixing camera and lens brands possible. Adapters are usually constructed of brass, aluminum or other metals. Like your lens, adapters will typically have a small release lever or button to make assembling and disassembling easier. Third party adapters vary greatly in price and quality and should be tested out with your camera body before purchase.
FX and DX Lenses
FX and DX are a frame size format used in almost all digital single-lens reflex cameras and lenses. When using a Canon lens with another company's camera body, ensure that the lens format and the camera format are the same. Many companies manufacture DX camera bodies that are not able to use FX lenses and vice versa. Nikon's DX cameras are compatible with FX lenses, though there may be a difference in quality compared to that of FX cameras using FX lenses.
