Acura 3 2 Tl Won'T Shift Out Of Park

Get your Acura moving again by cleaning the shifter mechanism.

You can get your Acura TL to shift out of park even if it is stuck. All today's shifters have a safety mechanism that prevents them from being shifted out of park without the brake pressed and the engine on. However, sometimes the mechanism can stick, causing the car to remain locked in park when the brake is depressed. By inspecting the inside of the shifter, you may be able to solve basic problems without the need for an expensive repair.

Instructions

1. Chock the wheels of the car with wood blocks and set the parking brake.

2. Twist the shift knob counterclockwise to unscrew it from the shifter.

3. Remove the trim around the shifter. Use a screwdriver to get around the edges of the trim to open the clips and pop it out. Work your screwdriver from the front to the back between the two black plastic pieces.

4. Examine the area underneath the shifter for any sticky substances, such as soda or coffee, that may have spilled and worked their way under the trim. Clean up the area with solvent cleaner. Try the shifter again to see if this has resolved the issue.

5. Replace the trim by pushing it onto the clips then screw the shift knob back into place.

6. Look at the right-hand side of the shifter for a small button. Press this button to deactivate the interlock and allow the shifter to be moved without having your foot on the brake. Press this button, shift the car out of park and move the stick to neutral.

Tips Warnings

You can start and drive the car with the shifter in neutral; just make sure you use the parking brake whenever you stop.
