Curtains create zones of privacy in a camper and prevent sun damage to the interior. Although any fabric can be used, camper curtains are usually made of medium-weight cotton, muslin or cotton blends. They can also be made from strings of beads, strips of bamboo and woven, knotted jute or sisal fiber. Wire is best around windows and across the aisle between the cab of the camper and the living quarters. Wooden or metal rods can be used, but require full-shoe end supports to prevent the rods from jostling loose while driving.
Instructions
1. Measure across each window at the top and bottom. Cut picture-hanging wire 3 inches longer than the width of each window. Drill a 1/8-inch pilot hole at each corner of each window. Seat sheet metal screws until they are halfway into the frame.
2. Measure the length of the window and add 3 inches. Measure the width of the window and multiply by 4. This gives you enough fabric to gather. Cut fabric to length and width. Fold the top edge of the fabric down 1 1/2 inches. Leave a 1/2-inch seam allowance and stitch the fabric to make a casing. Repeat for the bottom edge of the fabric. If desired, stitch decorative lace or other trims along the bottom seam.
3. Make a loop at one end of the picture-hanging wire. Thread wire through the top casing of the curtain. Open the loop. Wrap each end of the picture-hanging wire two or three turns around each screw. Finish turning the screws tight into the camper frame.
4. Make curtain tiebacks from strips of matching or coordinating fabric. If desired, add tassels to the tiebacks. Wind yarn, thread or embroidery floss around a paperback book, until the thread is 1/2 inch to 1 inch wide, to make tassels.
5. Slip a thread underneath all the loops at one end of the book and tie it tight. Slip a second thread through to make a hanging loop. Cut the bottom loops free, and trim them so the tassel looks even. Starting about a 1/2 inch down from the hanging loop, wrap several turns of thread around the tassel to make a hangman's knot. Glue the ends of the knot in place using instant adhesive.
