One benefit of analog audio devices is that they can often be easily connected to each other with an inexpensive adapter or cable. These adapters and cables can be bought in most retail consumer electronics or electronic supply stores. Connecting an amp to a cassette player is a simple task, but you should take care to lower the volume of both devices in order to prevent speaker damage. Loud pops, feedback or distortion can ruin your speakers in an instant.
Instructions
1. Determine what outputs your cassette player offers. These are often called "Line Out Left" and "Line Out Right." Typically, cassette players have left and right RCA (sometimes called "phono") outputs.
2. Determine what inputs your amplifier offers. Typically, amps have numerous input options, including RCA inputs. Sometimes inputs are labeled "Tape In" or "Line In," left and right.
3. Purchase a cable that will properly connect your two units. For instance, if your cassette player only offers a 1/8 stereo jack (sometimes called a "headphone jack") and your amplifier only accepts RCA inputs, you have to purchase a 1/8 stereo to RCA cable.
4. Lower the volume of both devices to zero.
5. Turn off both devices in order to avoid loud pops that can ruin your speakers.
6. Connect each end of the cable to the appropriate device.
7. Turn on the cassette player, followed by the amplifier.
8. Insert a cassette and play it, slowly raising the volume on the cassette player to a middle position.
9. Raise the volume on the amplifier. You should now hear the cassette playing. If you do not, check to make sure that your amplifier is properly connected to its speakers.
