Open The Back Of A Pentax Es Camera

The Pentax ES is a classic model of SLR (single-lens reflex) 35mm film camera. The ES uses standard rolls of 35mm film with a spring-loaded lever to advance the frame after each picture is taken. For someone unaccustomed to working with film cameras, opening the back of a Pentax ES is not intuitive. Care must also be taken to ensure any film in the camera is rewound into its cartridge before opening the back to prevent film exposure.

Instructions

1. Press the metal button on the bottom of the camera below the film advance spindle. This will disengage the spindle from the winding mechanism that moves the film forward after taking a picture. The button is on the right-hand side of the camera bottom.

2. Lift the fold-out handle on the left-hand knob on the top of the Pentax. This knob controls the film rewind spindle.

3. Turn the crank handle clockwise to rewind exposed film back into the 35mm cartridge. A clicking sound indicates the film is disengaged from the advance spindle. Another turn or two of the handle will draw the exposed film completely inside the light-proof cartridge.

4. Raise the folding handle vertically and pull straight up to release the locking mechanism. The back of the Pentax camera will pop open and the film cartridge can be removed.
