Restore Deleted Pictures From A Camera

When you delete images, remain calm.

When deleting images is as easy as the flick of a button, most camera users will find themselves in the unenviable position of having just deleted pictures they actually want to save. While their first reaction may be panic, many images can be retrieved with a small amount of time and modest expense. Getting the photos back is not challenging and should be done, if possible, soon after the users realize the images were deleted.

Instructions

1. Connect your digital camera to your computer using the USB cable. Wait for the camera to show up as connected to your computer.

2. Download a photo-recovery program. Ask Dave Taylor recommends CameraSalvage for Mac users, which is $50 in 2010 but which users can try free in demo mode. PC users can try CardRecovery, Art Plus Digital Photo Recovery or other similar programs.

3. Open the newly downloaded photo-recovery program. Mac users can find it in Applications and PC users can access it through the Start menu.

4. Select the drive for your photo-recovery program to scan your memory card. The memory card will be listed under the manufacturer, so you can easily identify it. Now press "Start" and wait while the photo-recovery program scans the memory card.

5. Wait for the program to scan the card. This will take a while if you had lots of images on the memory card.

6. View images from your memory card as thumbnails.

7. Check the boxes next to tiles you wish to save and select the "OK" or "Salvage" button (the name varies depending on program). Alternately, hold down the Ctrl key (PC users) or the Command button (Mac users) and highlight the file names with your mouse. Then click the "Salvage" button.

8. Wait while the photo-recovery software scans the deleted images back onto your computer.

9. Close the program when you finish and safely disconnect the camera from your computer.
