Use A Ieee 1394 Port

A FireWire computer connection is used for transferring large files.

The IEE 1394 port, known as FireWire, is a high-speed transport port created for use with large audio and video files. Capable of transfer rates of up to 400 Mbps, the port quickly moves these large files between devices for editing or presentation. With a computer that has the Windows operating system, use of the port is simple, using Window's plug-and-play feature to recognize devices as they're plugged into the port and give you a listing of applications common to that device. In addition, you can extend the port's use in creating a direct cabled network between two computers.

Instructions

1. Locate the IEEE 1394 port on your computer. You can look at the FireWire cable ends to see which port will fit the shape of the cable connection. Plug the cable into your device, turn on your computer and allow it to boot to the desktop.

2. Plug the IEEE 1394 plug into your computer and wait as the operating system recognizes your device. The wait may be a minute or two depending on the device type. Once recognized, Windows will inform you of the detection of your device, and open a dialog box presenting you with options related to the use of that particular device.

3. Choose the option related to your desired device. Options consist primarily of applications related to the device. For example, you will see options for Windows Movie Maker after plugging in a video camera, or Windows Explorer for an external hard drive. Select the option by clicking on your choice to start the application and make use of your connected device.

4. Use the IEEE 1394 connection as a single-session networking device by plugging the cable between two computers possessing IEEE 1394 ports. Plug in the cable and wait for Windows to create a network connection. Open Windows explorer and type "\\machine_name" into address box at the top of the explorer window, substituting the linked computer's machine name for "machine_name." This will give you access to shared components and files on the second computer.
