Hook Up A Power Amp

Installing a power amplifier for your home audio system is a great way of getting some extra juice to drive your speakers. In a component-based system, it's also one of the necessary pieces of equipment you'll need to hook up. The power amp is hooked up between the preamp and speakers. Here's get it done.

Instructions

1. Connect the preamplifer or receiver to the power amp. It will be a line level connection and specific cables needed vary by model. You will either use balanced connectors (XLR) or RCA connectors. Run a cable for each speaker that you plan to power with the amplifier.

2. Strip the ends of your speaker cable and insert two ends from one side of the cable into the power amplifier's speaker outputs.

3. Connect the other ends of your speaker cable to the appropriate speaker. Be sure to match the polarities properly (positive to positive and negative to negative).

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 for each speaker that will be powered by the amp.

5. Plug the amp into the electrical outlet. Your power amp is now hooked up and ready to play.
