Developed by corporate telecommunications company Avaya, the Audix multimedia server is available exclusively to business users. With its voice-mail-to-email feature, users can listen to their phone messages on a computer and forward them to another email address. Your company's IT department or another professional typically sets up an Audix server.
Audix System
As a multimedia server, Audix can link a corporation's email and voice mail systems. A voice mail received on a corporate telephone can be sent via the Audix server to an email address also linked to the server. Each computer or phone doesn't contain the server; instead, the company grants specific users access to the same server. As an authorized user, you can open a voice mail and play it through your computer's speakers or headphones.
Application
To receive voice mails within an email client, your network must have the www.messenger application. Avaya Professional services must set up the application for all users, as the software lives on a separate server and communicates with the Audix server via a Web browser. To play your voice mails on your computer, you need a sound card, Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, and Avaya's Voice Player, which is a Web application that helps with playback. The system administrator at your company will provide a URL that allows access to the application.
Compatible Email Programs
Audix will work with many email programs commonly used for corporate communication, including Microsoft Outlook, Microsoft Exchange, Lotus Notes 4.6, Netscape Navigator, Eudora Pro and Eudora Light. While you can access your email from a mobile phone with a Web browser, you won't be able to play voice mails, because your phone's IP address isn't configured to the server.
Considerations
As of February 2012, Audix is a Windows-based program, so Mac users can't listen to voice mails via email, even if they have the required company-based email address. Also, you must have an active Internet connection to use the www.messenger server or the Avaya Voice Player.
