Create Your Own Free Memorial Cards

As a final way to celebrate someone's life and reflect after the funeral, consider making memorial cards. Memorial cards may be handed out graveside or mailed by the family to relatives and friends who weren't able to attend the services. If funeral-home printed cards seem too generic or expensive, tailor your own cards to the memory of the person who passed away and save money by creating your own cards for free. Take advantage of your computer's desktop publishing program, which offers templates and designs to help you make cards as personal as you prefer and at no cost.

Instructions

1. Open a desktop publishing program and click Blank Publications. Select a card size from the options, such as the postcard, and double-click the template for it to open in the program workspace. Change the size to your preferences by clicking File, Page Setup, Custom and typing in the exact dimensions, then clicking the OK button.

2. Scroll the design options panel to find a background design for the memorial card, such as flowers, handprints, lines or blocks.

3. Click the Color Schemes link on the Publication Designs panel on the left side of screen and select a color family that represents your preferred style for the memorial card. Double-click the color set and the memorial card will automatically update.

4. Click the Text tool, which looks like an index card with an A on it, on the left side of the screen. Draw a text box on the card and type a memorial prayer such as Footprints or The Resurrection Prayer, or a personal message reflecting on the life of the deceased.

5. (Optional) Click Insert, choose Picture and select From File. Browse to a location on your computer where you have a photo of the person to memorialize. Double-click the picture and it appears on the memorial card workspace; drag it into place at the top of the card, left corner or wherever you prefer.

6. (Optional) Add an image to the card by clicking Insert, Picture and Clip Art. Type a word or phrase such as prayer, cross, grave, hands or angel into the Search for box and click Go. Scroll through the images and double-click one. It appears on the card workspace; shrink it and drag it into place with your cursor.

7. Add another text box toward the bottom of the card and type the person's name, birth date and, if preferred, the date the person passed away. Highlight the text with your cursor and use the text toolbar at the top of the page to increase the font size, make it bold and change the color.

Tips Warnings

Your computer may offer a variety of ways to make memorial cards for free. Depending on your version of the Microsoft Office Suite, your computer probably has the Microsoft Publisher desktop publishing layout and design program. Both Publisher, and another layout program, InDesign--part of the Adobe Creative Suite for-sale package--offer free trial downloads where you can experiment with ease of use making memorial cards in the programs before spending money on buying software. You can also make free memorial cards in a word processing program such as Microsoft Word (part of the Office Suite), but because word processing programs focus more on text, you won't have as much ease of use for design and layout placement as in a desktop publishing program. You can also sketch basic cards in a drawing program such as Paint, included with your computer's installation package.
