List Of Veterinary Technician Schools In Virginia

Veterinary technicians assist in surgery.

Veterinary technicians are a vital part of the support staff of any veterinarian. Vet techs work hard to ensure optimal care for pets, laboratory animals, livestock, zoo dwellers and wildlife. Assisting in surgery and performing diagnostic testing are just two of the many and varied tasks completed by veterinary technicians on a daily basis. Students in the state of Virginia have the opportunity to become veterinary technicians through two on-campus programs or two distance learning programs.

Blue Ridge College

Blue Ridge College in Weyer's Cave, Va., offers students the opportunity to obtain an Associates of Applied Science (A.A.S) in veterinary technology. The course is five semesters long and the program is fully accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA). Students who successfully pass the program are able to take the Veterinary Technician (VTNE). The Blue Ridge College veterinary technology program offers hands-on clinical work each semester, building on theoretical knowledge to prepare students for a career caring for small companion animals, such as dogs and cats. The veterinary technician training program at Blue Ridge College is open to high school graduates who have passed algebra and biology.

The vet tech program offers education on both domestic companion animals as well as the knowledge needed to work with laboratory animals, zoo animals and wildlife. Students graduating from the program are eligible to take the VTNE for certification. The veterinary technology program offered by the Northern Virginia Community College is taught exclusively at the Loudoun Campus in Sterling, Va. The program is open to high school graduates, with preference given to people already working or volunteering in the field of veterinary sciences.

Distance Learning

Both the Blue Ridge Community College and the Northern Virginia Community College offer students a chance to earn their A.A.S in veterinary technology via fully accredited distance learning programs. Both of these programs are eligible only to residents of Virginia. Both courses of study involve theoretical knowledge with hands-on clinical work performed at a facility close to the student. The NVCC program requires students to visit the Loudoun campus two times a semester for the purposes of testing and evaluation, while the Blue Ridge Community College program requires students to visit three times a semester for the same purpose.
