Laundry faucets are not usually pretty, but they are easy to maintain.
Repairing your double handled laundry tray faucet is just one of the many home maintenance chores everyone enjoys. Although laundry tray faucets are rare in many areas, they are still a popular addition to many homes. Be sure the water is completely shut off before you begin your repair. If you are not comfortable shutting the water off yourself, contact your water utility company to schedule a good time for both of you.
Instructions
1. Close off all water supply to the laundry faucet. There should be an individual fixture shut-off valve located on both the hot and cold water supply lines. If not, you will need to turn off the main water supply to the residence.
2. Open both hot and cold valves to drain the supply lines and relieve excess water pressure. As long as all the other water faucets and appliances in the house remain turned off, you should have no problems with water back-flowing through the laundry faucet.
3. Remove the two laundry faucet handles. Depending on the brand and model, you may heed either a flat head or Phillips screwdriver. Remove newer style faucet handles by loosening an Allen screw located inside the base of each handle; you will need a hex wrench for this.
4. Unscrew the laundry faucet stems with an adjustable wrench. An 8-inch crescent wrench works best. If you use too large a pipe wrench, you can damage the stem or cartridge lock nut. Turn the cartridge lock nuts or stem counterclockwise to loosen and remove them.
5. Install new rubber washers in compression-style laundry faucets and new cartridges in washer-less faucets. Remove the old rubber washers from the faucet stems with a flat head screwdriver. Unscrew the washer seat screw counterclockwise; remove what is left of the old washer. Install the new rubber faucet washer by tightening the seat screw securely. Tighten all fittings firmly and replace the laundry faucet handles. Turn on the water supply(s) and check the faucet for leaks around the hand connection areas.
Tips Warnings
Lubricate all faucet components with plumber's waterproof grease or Teflon coating before reinstalling them into the faucet body.
Do not over-tighten the washer seat screw; you will damage the new washer.
