Setting up Comcast on your own doesn't involve too many wires.
It can be expensive to set up cable Internet or TV, especially when you have to pay an installation fee. Luckily, there are ways to set these up without breaking the bank: You can get a self installation kit and install the services yourself, or you can find an offer that waives the installation fee.
Instructions
Instructions for Self-Installation Kit
1. Call Comcast at 1-800-COMCAST (1-800-266-2278) to find out if Comcast is available in your area.
2. Request a self-installation kit. Ask about any costs involved. Typically, you pay a $10 fee for shipping the kit. Ask the agent where the nearest Comcast office is and pick it up there for free. If you subscribe for TV, you pay a fee for the cable box and remote in your monthly bill. If you subscribe for Internet service, you pay a fee for the modem included in your monthly bill as well.
3. A typical coaxial cable.
Open the kit. You will find a splitter, coaxial cable for connection to the modem (generally black or white and thick with gold or silver tips), ethernet cable and the Comcast modem.
4. A typical ethernet cable.
Plug the modem into your computer with the ethernet cable, which is generally blue, green, white or black with square plastic ends. The plastic ends fit into the back of the modem and into your computer, generally in the back of the tower of a desktop computer, or on the side or back of a laptop. Then, plug the modem into your wall cable jack with the coaxial cable, which can be inserted into a silver or gold colored jack in the back of the modem. Twist the end of the coaxial cable to secure it. Plug the modem into a power source, such as a plug in the wall or a power strip.
If you are installing TV, simply plug the coax cable into the cable jack in the wall and the other end into the back of the TV.
5. A typical cable splitter.
Boot up your computer and an Internet browser and follow the instructions on the browser screen. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you are installing Internet and cable TV, the cable splitter will come in handy. A splitter allows you to connect a coaxial cable from both your modem and your TV to the cable jack in the wall.
Finding an Offer
6. Check out comcast.com or call 1-800-COMCAST (1-800-266-2278) to see what deals are offered in your area. Comcast changes offers frequently, and the duration of offers varies.
7. Call Comcast to set up your account and clarify the offer. Find out if there are are any hidden fees, how long an offer lasts and when the price will go up again. Ask if you can change to another service at the end of the current service period.
8. Clarify if there is an installation fee. If there is, ask if you can get the self installation kit, but still get the deal on offer.
