Bathtub Refacing

Bathtub Refacing

Bathtub refacing is ideal for bathtubs that are old, discolored or rusted. It also will bring back the shine to a tub that has a dull appearance. Refacing your bathtub may save you more money than replacing it. You'll also avoid the mess of having your plumbing and flooring torn out and replaced. Some companies may use a slightly different method for refacing a bathtub.

Clean and Prepare

A bathtub needs to be cleaned thoroughly before it's refaced. Soap scum, grease, dirt and any oily film should be removed. Sandpaper can help get rid of built-up soaps and oils. Make sure to remove caulking. Some companies will use a two-step process to clean your tub. This may include using a cleaner to remove caulk or silicone and another cleaner to remove soap, oil and dirt. Also, damage to your tub such as cracks and chips need to be fixed. Cleaning and fixing your tub prepares it for the chemical treatment which etches the surface for preparation of new surface material.

Bonding Agents

The fixtures and other parts of the bathtub should be covered before bonding agents are applied. Bonding agents help the new finish bond with the old finish. This bonding happens at the molecular level. It should be completely dry before the next step is started. An excellent bonding agent is called Miracle Method because it's very durable and has superior adhesion. It's also safe because it doesn't have harmful chemicals. A waterproof epoxy primer may also be used to help with bonding. This type of primer usually lasts a long time.

Paint

Paint is applied after the bonding agent or primer is applied. Acrylic polymer coating is a kind of paint with a very durable finish that will stick or adhere to the exterior of your bathtub. Two or three top coats should be painted on with a sprayer using slow and even motions from the bottom and up. Be careful not to overspray or the paint may run. The benefits of acrylic polymer paint are its flexibility and resilience. It also comes in many different colors to match your d#233;cor. Your tub should be ready to use in a day or two.
